How to Clean and Maintain Aluminium Utensils
Aluminium utensils are prized for fast, even cooking and light weight — but like any cookware, they last longer with the right care. Here is how to keep your aluminium cookware bright and stain-free.
1. Wash by hand with mild soap
Use warm water, a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Avoid harsh steel wool on polished or anodized surfaces, which can scratch the finish. Dry thoroughly to prevent water spots.
2. Remove discolouration naturally
Aluminium can darken over time. Boil water with a tablespoon of lemon juice, vinegar or cream of tartar in the utensil for 10–15 minutes, then wash normally. The mild acid restores the bright surface without damaging the metal.
3. Tackle burnt food gently
Soak in warm soapy water before scrubbing. For stubborn residue, boil water inside the vessel to loosen it. Avoid banging or denting the base — a flat base cooks evenly.
4. Avoid harsh alkalis
Strong alkaline cleaners (like caustic soda) react with aluminium and cause pitting. Stick to mild, pH-neutral cleaners.
5. Store dry
Always store aluminium utensils completely dry to prevent surface oxidation, especially in humid conditions.
